Emergency crews work the scene of a crash on Monday, June 17, 2019, along Rt. 22 near its intersection with Quarry Drive in Salem Township.

Three people were transported to area hospitals following a head-on, two-car crash Monday afternoon on Route 22 in Salem.

A Westmoreland 911 supervisor said the crash happened around 5:15 p.m. along westbound Route 22, just east of its intersection with Route 819.

Forbes Road VFD Chief Bob Rosatti said a male patient was trapped in his vehicle after it flipped onto its roof following the crash. He was flown by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian.

“We were able to land the helicopter in front of Colonial Park, near the 819 intersection,” Rosatti said.

Two patients who were in the second vehicle were transported from the scene by ambulance.

Witnesses gave conflicting reports about how the crash occurred, Rosatti said.
