The Loyalhanna Watershed Association is looking for volunteers to clean litter from roadsides near Ligonier and Latrobe.

The 14th annual spring cleanup, planned to cover more than 50 miles of roads, is set for 9 a.m. to noon April 27. The association wants to sign up volunteers by April 15.

Several major roads in the area have been adopted by groups, through cleanup programs organized by PennDOT and Westmoreland Cleanways. “Many more are in need of litter pickup,” according to Josh Penatzer, watershed association program manager and cleanup organizer.

Areas where the group will target trash include sections of the Route 30 corridor in Unity, extending from the traffic light near Saint Vincent College east to Kingston Dam, as well as Ligonier Borough and roads in the Darlington, Wilpen, Waterford, Stahlstown, Bolivar, Laughlintown and Rector areas.

PennDOT and the Great American Cleanup of PA will provide trash bags, safety equipment and refreshments for volunteers.

Those who participate will continue the efforts of more than 3,000 volunteers who have pitched in over the years. Individuals and groups can register for the event by contacting Penatzer at josh@loyalwater.com or 724-238-7560.
