Volunteers help install the Avenue of Flags at the West Newton Cemetery in 2019.

Volunteers are needed Saturday to remove the more than 350 U.S. flags that were installed last month to honor local veterans for the 27th Annual Avenue of Flags at the West Newton Cemetery.

Those interested in helping are asked to meet at the cemetery office on Vernon Drive at 9 a.m. to assist volunteers from the West Newton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7812 and the West Newton Moose Lodge No. 31. Covid-19 social distancing and precautions will be observed, said Stacey Federoff, a Sutersville native who is a coordinator of the Avenue of Flags initiative.

Some tools will be provided, but it is helpful for volunteers to bring the following to disassemble the memorial plaques: slotted-edge screwdriver, adjustable pliers and ⅜-inch or 7/16-inch socket wrench or a Crescent wrench.

Coffee and doughnuts will be provided in the morning, with pizza afterward for the volunteers.

More information is available on the West Newton Avenue of Flags Facebook page.
