About 600 people are expected to come to Twin Lakes Park in Hempfield next month to raise money for multiple sclerosis research.

The Walk MS: Greensburg event on May 11 is expected to raise about $70,000.

Multiple sclerosis can disable the central nervous system and cause paralysis. The exact symptoms vary from person to person, and are hard to predict.

A study published in February found almost 1 million Americans suffered from MS, more than double the number previously thought.

Walk MS is a national series of events that has raised more than $1 billion since the first walk in 1988.

The Pittsburgh walk was held at Point State Park Sunday. Nearly 3,000 participants raised more than $321,000.

The Greensburg walk starts 11 a.m. May 11 at Twin Lakes Park. Registration is open online at the National MS Society website until 12 p.m. May 9.
