A restored Air Force P-40 Warhawk fighter plane will join the high-flying spectacle May 25-26 at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Unity.
The World War II-era aircraft will be featured in the “Tora! Tora! Tora!” program during the 2019 Shop ‘n Save Westmoreland County Airshow. The plane and the program both will be provided by the Texas-based Commemorative Air Force.
The presentation, employing replica Japanese warplanes and explosive effects, recalls the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that launched the United States into the war.
The P-40 pilot will take on the role of a chase fighter pilot who opposed the attackers at Pearl Harbor.
“There were two P-40s that got up in the air during Pearl Harbor, and he’s going to reenact one of those people,” said Gabe Monzo, Westmoreland County Airport Authority executive director.
The P-40 plane also will be featured in a separate, solo routine. It is painted with the shark-mouthed design and color scheme of World War II ace David Lee “Tex” Hill, who shot down enemy aircraft while serving with the American Volunteer Group Flying Tigers, defending China against Japanese invaders.
F-16 Viper and Canadian Forces Snowbirds air demonstration teams are among other acts that have been confirmed for this year’s air show. Also featured will be a Harrier jet, capable of vertical takeoffs and landings.
“It’s all coming together very nicely,” said Monzo. “It’s going to be a great show.”
VIP show tickets, including free parking, limousine service to a VIP tent, a private rest room, food and beverages, cost $150 for adults or $50 for ages 6-12 accompanied by an adult. They can be purchased online at palmerairport.com .
General admission tickets go on sale in February at $25, with a discounted price offered at Shop ’n Save supermarkets.
