A construction project on a water main shut down Second Street in Monessen Tuesday morning, according to Westmoreland County 911.

Though originally reported as a water main break just before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, it was actually a planned project, according to the Borough of Charleroi Water Authority, which supplies water services to Monessen.

The water authority could not provide details about how many customers are affected, or how long the road would be closed.

According to Tony Vitale, the city engineer for Monessen, the water main is being updated in conjunction with a PennDOT project to reconstruct a section of the concrete street. He said any traffic interruptions should not be long-term, and he expects the project to be completed by the end of this year’s construction season.
