A West Mifflin man accused in five 2017 gas station and convenience store robberies in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties was arrested Tuesday in South Carolina by the U.S. Marshals Service.

Bennie J. Carter, 54, is accused of being the getaway driver in an alleged conspiracy with three other suspects, according to police. Charges were filed in December 2017.

The U.S. Marshals Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force learned Carter may have fled to Sumter, S.C., where he was apprehended without incident, according to an announcement. Sumter is located 45 miles west of state capital Columbia and is about 550 miles away Western Pennsylvania.

Carter is charged by West Mifflin police and Westmoreland County detectives with robbery, conspiracy and related offenses in five cases. In Westmoreland, he is accused in:

• an early-morning holdup at the BP gas station on Route 30 at Arona Road in North Huntingdon on Oct. 6, 2017.

• an attempted robbery at the same station the following day.

• an armed robbery Nov. 4, 2017 at the Sunoco station on Route 66 in Delmont.

He is accused of similar crimes Oct. 8 and 31, 2017 in West Mifflin.

No court action has been set in the local cases.
