Westmoreland commissioners vote to show support for Israel
Westmoreland Commissioners took an unusual step into foreign policy on Thursday as they formally expressed support for Israel following last month’s terrorist attack that left more than 1,300 dead.
Commissioners unanimously adopted a resolution that backs Israel’s right to defend itself, condemns terrorism and called for humanitarian aid to innocent victims, including Palestinians injured during the conflict.
“We have a strong Jewish community here in Westmoreland County and we want to show our support. This resolution calls for peace in the Middle East as well. We want to stand with our partners,” said Commissioner Sean Kertes.
County commissioners typically approve a series of proclamations at the start of their monthly meetings to honor accomplishments of residents and promote local successes. On Thursday, commissioners approved proclamations that acknowledged the important of local adoptions, a local resident’s birthday and support for a small business event later this month.
The resolution for Israel was listed during the business section of Thursday’s meeting, among more than two dozen other county actions that including routine spending and the awarding of contracts.
The resolution noted the violence launched against Israel, it’s right for self defense and called for a lasting peace in the region.
Commissioner Doug Chew said county leaders wanted to send a clear message of support for Israel.
“Terrorism has no place in this world and whenever you have a chance to talk about peace we should all take it,” Chew said.
Commissioner Ted Kopas also voted to back to county’s position on Israel.
“The resolution speaks for itself,” Kopas said.
