Westmoreland coronavirus death toll rises by 1 to 32
A man died from the coronavirus in Westmoreland County, bringing the death toll to 32, officials said Thursday.
Coroner Ken Bacha is keeping a running total on his website because he is being notified of the deaths sooner than the state health department, which is tracking the virus across Pennsylvania. Deaths related to infectious diseases are required by law to be reported to coroners in the counties where the death occurred.
Bacha has said the majority of the county’s deaths are connected to personal care facilities. The death rate in the county has slowed over the last couple weeks, as has the number of confirmed cases. The last death was reported Monday.
Seventeen women and 15 men have died in the county as a result of the virus, according to Bacha’s figures. The oldest was 109 and the youngest was 61. All were white.
The county has had 411 confirmed coronavirus cases as of Thursday, according to the state Department of Health. The department continued to report 29 deaths related to the virus, 26 of which were in long-term care facilities.
Statewide, there have been 3,416 deaths from the virus and the case count has reached 52,915.
