Hempfield fire officials barricaded North Center Avenue to divert traffic away from a fatal crash in Youngwood on Wednesday. The crash happened at Racetrack and Wilson Fox roads.

An 88-year-old woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Hempfield on Wednesday afternoon.

Elizabeth R. Anderson, of Hempfield, was pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m., according to the Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office.

The crash occurred at about 1:50 p.m. at Racetrack and Wilson Fox roads, near Hempfield’s border with New Stanton and Youngwood, according to 911 dispatchers.

Anderson was driving a Toyota RAV4 south on Racetrack Road near the Fox Den Acres Campground when she swerved into the wrong lane and off the road. Her SUV struck an embankment and a tree, which flipped the vehicle onto its roof, according to the coroner’s report and state police.

“The SUV overturned, slid across the road and struck a van headed the other direction. The driver of the van was not hurt,” said Youngwood Fire Chief Lloyd Crago.

Troopers said the Chrysler Town & Country minivan had minor damage and there were two people inside. Anderson was traveling by herself.

State police in Greensburg are investigating. The cause of the crash is unknown, according to the coroner’s report.
