A man shot and killed himself during a traffic stop in Ligonier Township on Saturday, a spokeswoman for the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office said Sunday.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. near Route 30 and Baywood Road, spokeswoman Melanie Jones said.

According to Jones, county detectives were called out to help Ligonier Valley Police investigate a report of shots fired.

Police encountered a male, heard gunshots, and determined the male involved died due to a self-inflicted wound,” she said.

Jones did not explain why police had stopped the man. His name has not been released.

The investigation found that police did not fire any shots, and that no shots were fired directly at law enforcement officers.

“The incident was contained and there was no threat to the community,” Jones said.

No other information about the incident was provided.
