The Westmoreland County Food Bank is again teaming up with a Scottdale company to raise money for its food programs.

The third annual “Day 2 Don8” on Sept. 28 will allow donors to match a $5,000 challenge gift from Penn Line Service Inc.

“Penn Line has been a generous sponsor of Hunger Action Month activities for many years,” said Lauren Hill, food bank director of development. “We are grateful for their return and support this year.”

The food bank hopes to leverage the matching gift into a larger amount in support of its Food Pantry Distribution and other programs.

The “Day 2 Don8” is part of Hunger Action Month, a series of fundraising and awareness-raising activities held in September by Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks.

In addition to the “Day 2 Don8,” the food bank will host the annual Hunger Action Month Partnership Luncheon at noon Sept. 12. The event will include a display of original artwork by Christopher Visgitis. A silent auction will be held for the pieces on display, and half the proceeds will go to the food bank.

There also will be a display in the Westmoreland County Courthouse courtyard for the month of September to commemorate Hunger Action Month.

According to Feeding America,

  • 2.4 million rural households face hunger;
  • 1 in 6 children in the United States may not know where they will get their next meal;
  • nearly 5 million U.S. senior citizens face hunger, with the number of food-insecure seniors possibly growing to more than 8 million by 2050 at the current rate;
  • Black households face hunger at more than two times the rate of white households, with 1 in 4 African American children struggling to get enough to eat.
