A Westmoreland County Prison inmate is charged with attacking his cellmate, according to county detectives.
William J. Hill, 33, of Everson, was arraigned Tuesday on charges of aggravated assault and simple assault in connection with a 5:30 a.m. Dec. 20 attack on his 26-year-old cellmate.
Det. James Williams reported the victim was asleep in his bunk when Hill placed a hard bar of soap in a sock and repeatedly swung it, striking the man’s face and head.
“(The victim) had to be transported to Excela Health Westmoreland hospital in Greensburg for treatment of injuries to his head and face,” Williams said.
Williams said the victim suffered multiple lacerations and a facial fractures as a result of the assault.
Hill, who was in prison in connection with an access device fraud conviction, told Williams during an interview that he became angry after coming across the victim’s court paperwork in the cell that showed he was convicted of sexual assault charges involving a child.
Williams also said in court documents that Hill admitted to the attack during a hearing on the assault at the prison.
Hempfield District Judge Mark Mansour set Hill’s bond at $50,000. He remains in the prison.
