Westmoreland County reports 2nd highest number of daily coronavirus cases

Westmoreland County added 133 new coronavirus cases Thursday, its second highest daily increase in cases, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported. The county also reported two new deaths.

The county’s seven-day average is 91 cases and the county’s seven-day case total is 635. The total number of cases in the county now stands at 3,836 with 3,423 confirmed and 413 probable since the first cases were reported in March.

The highest number of cases came last Thursday when the county saw 148 cases.

The 133 cases stem from 588 tests for a daily positivity rate of 22.6%. Overall, the county’s positivity rate sits at 7.18%.

There have been 1,537 cases in October already, giving it the highest monthly total of coronavirus cases. September saw just 462 new cases reported in the county, while July had the previous highest total with 763 cases reported.

The death toll in the county is now 78; there have been 22 deaths this month. In September, there were seven deaths reported in Westmoreland County.

According to the state’s covid-19 dashboard, 46 Westmoreland County residents are hospitalized for covid-19, with five patients on a ventilator.

Residents at a North Huntingdon care facility tested positive for coronavirus this month, officials announced Wednesday night. Transitions Healthcare posted on their Facebook page that 60 residents had contracted coronavirus in October.
