Westmoreland County sees highest single-day jump in new coronavirus cases

Westmoreland County saw its highest single-day spike in cases on Thursday, adding 69 new cases, as well as two new deaths, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported.

The county’s total cases are now 2,608 with 2,446 confirmed and 162 probable since the first cases were reported in March.

There have been 309 cases in October. In September there were 462 cases reported in the county, its second-highest monthly total behind July (763).

With two new deaths reported, the death toll in the county is now 59. There have been three deaths this month. In September, there were seven deaths reported in the county.

County officials reported Wednesday that two residents at Westmoreland Manor died after contracting the coronavirus, as well as another significant increase in the number of infections at the county-owned nursing home in Hempfield.

According to the state, 17 Westmoreland County residents are hospitalized for covid-19, with one patient on a ventilator.
