The Pfizer vaccine will be available at a vaccination clinic at Seton Hill University this week.

Westmoreland County officials announced Tuesday the county will open a coronavirus vaccine clinic this week at Seton Hill University in Greensburg.

The clinic, with vaccines provided by Walmart, is set to vaccinate up to 1,400 residents over three days, starting Friday, according to Public Safety Director Roland Mertz.

“We’re trying to make more of these happen,” Mertz said.

Appointments for first doses of the Pfizer vaccine are available for three dates, Friday, Tuesday and April 14. To register for an appointment, call 1-800-753-8827 and select Option 1 when prompted. Mertz said online registration is not available for the clinic.

Vaccinations will be administered at the McKenna Center on the campus of Seton Hill University. Parking will be available in Lot E on the campus. Westmoreland County Transit Authority will operate from the parking lot to provide free round-trip bus service for those with appointments.

Ken Thomas, a regional pharmacy clinical services manager at Walmart, said there could be future clinics planned for the area as need and supply allows.

“We are open to continuing to partner with the community,” he said.

Some of the slots have been filled by senior citizens who are enrolled in the state’s prescription assistance program and others through local Area Agencies on Aging, according to state officials. Thomas said the clinics are open to anyone who is eligible under the state’s vaccine guidelines.

Vaccines will be available to residents who qualify as part of the Phase 1A, 1B and 1C groups as set by the state’s health department, including those 65 and older, people with certain medical conditions, first responders, grocery store workers, clergy, construction workers, county and municipal government workers, food service employees and a variety of other public and private workers.

Westmoreland County officials have for the past several months worked on plans for mass vaccination clinics and established a list of six potential sites that included the Seton Hill location. Thomas said Westmoreland County Commissioner Gina Cerilli helped connect Walmart with the Department of Public Safety. Mertz worked with partners this week and selected the college to host the clinic.

“Walmart is providing the support to administer the doses, and we’re providing the oversight for the location,” Mertz said.

According to statistics from Pennsylvania Department of Health, about 17% of Westmoreland County residents have been fully vaccinated for coronavirus. The state said 52,835 Westmoreland County residents are partially vaccinated and 62,756 are fully vaccinated.

Additional mass vaccination clinics are being planned.

“We’re going to take every available vaccine dose we can get,” Mertz said. “I know we will have more opportunities for these clinics, and we’ll be able to select other areas of the county to do this in.”
