Westmoreland halts most visits to county nursing home

Westmoreland County commissioners on Friday halted visitation for most residents at the county-owned nursing home in Hempfield.

Commissioners will conduct a news conference at 9 a.m. Saturday at the courthouse to unveil the county’s full response plan to the coronavirus pandemic.

The new restriction at the 400-bed Westmoreland Manor started Friday at 4 p.m.

“This is out of an abundance of caution, there is not any indication of exposure at this time,” officials said in a news release.

Visitation will be allowed for the Manor’s end-of-life residents. One immediate family member will be allowed at a time and will be screened to ensurethey are free of symptoms from the coronavirus. Manor staff will escort family members to resident rooms.

Staff will be screened for coronavirus symptoms and increased efforts to disinfect the facility will be ongoing. Staff will provide recreational events for Manor residents, county officials said.

“Our highest priority is to protect our residents, their families and our staff,” county officials said.
