Westmoreland happenings: Monarch butterfly program, art exhibit, plant sale, more

Art
• The Greensburg Art Center will host its new exhibit, “Biennial 2023,” that will be May 6 through June 30 at the center, 230 Todd School Road, Hempfield. A free reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. May 6 . The event is a juried art exhibit that is held every two years at the center. Awards will be presented at 8 p.m. at the end of the reception. Church
• Greensburg Church of the Brethren will host a night of fun and fellowship for individuals and groups with developmental disabilities from 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays at the church, 554 Stanton St. Dinner is included. Class
• The Lunch and Learn series at Laurelville Retreat Center, 941 Laurelville Lane, Mt. Pleasant Township, will present a program on monarch butterflies at noon May 15 at the center small dining hall. Speakers Deb Christopher and Patti Schildkamp will discuss how to become a Monarch Watch Waystation and establish a summer habitat. Cost: $20. Fundraisers
• Lincoln Heights Civic Association will have bingo from 1 to 3 p.m. May 4 and 18 at the center, 42 Millersdale Road, Jeannette. There will be 20 regular games and five quickies. Cost: 25 cents for a three-card board; $1 for quickies. Payout is 50/50. Free coffee.
• A super bingo will be May 5 at Marian Hall at St. Bartholomew Church, 2538 Route 119, Crabtree. Doors open at 5 p.m. and early birds begin at 6:30 p.m. Admission: $35, and additional packs will be available. Firehouse Subs will be available. • A rummage and bake sale will be hosted by the Philanthropic Educational Organization from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 6 at Maplewood Presbyterian Church, 108 Woodland Road, Hempfield. Proceeds will benefit educational scholarships for women.
• St. John the Evangelist Church, 306 St. John Drive, Latrobe, will have a spring craft and vendor show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 6 in the church hall. Homemade haluski, burgers, hot dogs, coffee and soft drinks will be sold. Free admission. There will be a basket raffle and 50/50. The hall is wheelchair accessible. Details: 724-875-0742.

• Jeannette American Legion will host a bingo at 1 p.m. May 7 at the post, 109 S. Fifth St. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Cost: $25 per packet, includes regular and special games. Full extra packets, $15. • The Westmoreland County/Laurel Highlands chapter of the American Field Service high school exchange program will meet at 7 p.m. May 8 at the One Room Schoolhouse, 810 Welty St., Souythwest Greensburg. Hempfield High School exchange student Stepan Yantso from Italy will discuss his country and Italian refreshments will be served. Special event
• A two-day, one-night backpacking trip for women will be May 13 and 14 on the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. The program is designed as an introduction to modern backpacking techniques. The hike will cover almost 14 miles over two days and terrain will be challenging with uphill climbing. Overnight accommodations will be Adirondack-style shelters.
