Westmoreland happenings: Polka dances, fire department festival, car wash, more

Camps

• Seton Arts Service Corps will have a music, art and dance camp for children in first through eighth grade from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 24 to 28 at the Seton Hill Arts Center, 201 W. Ottoman St., Greensburg. Cost: $10, includes a morning snack and pizza lunch. Reservations required by July 10 at 724-836-0406, ext. 6610 or scsh.org.

Church news

• Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greensburg, will celebrate the church’s 175th anniversary July 16 with a dinner at Greensburg Country Club in Hempfield. Former members and their family members who are interested in attending should call 724-834-9060.

Fundraisers

• Union Presbyterian Church, 656 Route 380, Washington Township, will sell drive-thru chicken dinners at the church from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. June 22 or until the food runs out. Menu: baked chicken, gravy, baked potato, sour cream, green beans, roll, butter, applesauce and cookies. Donations to benefit Ronald McDonald House will be accepted. Drive to the back door of the church.

• The Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department Festival will be from 5 to 10 p.m. June 22 to 24 in front of the West Smithfield Street Firemen’s Club, rain or shine. The parade will be at 7 p.m. June 23, with lineup at 6 p.m. A car show and DJ King and Bling will be June 24. There will be entertainment, food, games and crafts.

• The Disciples’ Hands Ministry at Greensburg Church of the Brethren will sponsor a car wash from 9 a.m. to noon June 24 in the church parking lot, 554 Stanton St., Greensburg. Donations will be accepted. Proceeds will be used to feed the hungry.

• Knights of Columbus will have a burger and kielbasa bash and bake sale from 6:30 to 8 p.m. June 24 in St. Edward Church hall, 120 St. Edward Lane, Herminie. Menu: burgers and chips, $7; kielbasa and chips, $8; sauerkraut and cheese available; bake sale items and drinks. Dine in or takeout. The hall is accessible.

• Westmoreland County Federation of SNPJ Lodges will sponsor a benefit dance with the Polka Classics from 2 to 6 p.m. June 25 in the Yukon Slovenian Hall, 137 Yukon Ave. There will be food, beverages, a silent auction and door prizes. Details: Lois, 412-554-7404. Proceeds will benefit local cancer patients.

• A polka night featuring the Pa. Express Band will be from 2 to 5 p.m. June 25 at the Mt. Pleasant Veterans of Foreign Wars, 416 W. Main St. Polish platters will be sold for $10, and other Polish food will be available a la carte. Admission: $10.

• The third annual Mike Reese Memorial 5K Roast, Run and Family event will be July 2 at pavilion 1 in Mammoth Park in Mt. Pleasant Township. Check-in and pack pickup will begin at 9 a.m. and the race will start at 10 a.m., Lunch and entertainment will begin at 11:30 a.m. Cost: $50; younger than 21, $25, includes lunch, drinks and entertainment. Funds raised will provide scholarships to local high school graduates and athletes with limited financial resources who want to participate in travel team programs. • Family medicine physician Dr. Jessie Milliken will discuss medications that support brain health and the signs and symptoms of dementia at the meeting of the Westmoreland Mall Walkers at 8:20 a.m. June 22 in the mall food court, Hempfield. Doors open at 7:45 a.m.

Reunion

Senior Citizen news

• The Jeannette Center for Active Adults, 211 Gaskill Ave., will host a free program June 23 featuring Elvis impersonator Jim Felix. Public welcome. Reservations required: 724-527-3200 or stop in at the center.
