Westmoreland happenings: Trolley lecture, Glass City Heritage Festival, '80s dance party, more
Children’s event
• YWCA Westmoreland County will sponsor a free children’s literacy fair 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 13 at the center, 424 N. Main St. Children can enjoy craft stations, face painting, free food, button making, games and a story time. Children who are registered in advance will receive a free book and there will be a meet-and-greet with local children’s authors. Registration: 724-834-9390 or ywcawestmoreland.org/events.
Festival
• The Glass City Heritage Festival will be held 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 13 in the 400 and 500 blocks of Clay Avenue in Jeannette. There will be food, crafters, vendors, pumpkin painting, a basket raffle, balloon animals and face painting. The Knights of Columbus will distribute free coats. Activities will include a story time, police dog demonstration, community band concert, and pottery wheel and glass blowing demonstrations.
Fundraisers
• Westmoreland Historical Society will host its antiques and collectibles market Sept. 14 at Historic Hanna’s Town, 809 Forbes Trail Road, Hempfield. Some vendors will be set up and selling on Sept. 13 and the rest will be open from 7:30 a.m. until early afternoon Sept. 14. Admission: $5 per car. A portion of parking revenues benefit the Forbes Road Volunteer Fire Department. The market will be open the second Sunday of each month through October. • A Back to the ’80s dance party will be from 5 to 11 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Unity Township American Legion, 158 American Legion Road. A DJ will play 80s hits by request and there will be a buffet, drink specials, a 50-50 and prizes for the best dressed. Buffet cost: $10. Admission is free and the public is welcome. Proceeds will benefit veterans charities.
History
• Baltzer Meyer Historical Society will sponsor a talk by Dennis Cramer from the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 13 at Harrold Hall, 642 Baltzer Meyer Pike, Greensburg.
Meetings
• The Braddock Trail chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet Sept. 13 at the chapter house, 200 S. Church St., Mt. Pleasant. Lunch will be at noon and the meeting will be at 1 p.m. Treasurer Debra Massafra will present a program about the War of 1812 — Canada.
• Rostraver Sportsmen and Conservation Association, 559 Cedar Creek Road, Rostraver, will meet at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 15. The club hosts trap shoots from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, and at 10 a.m. Thursdays and 11 a.m. Saturdays. Public welcome. Details: 412-580-9038 or rostraversca.org.
Veterans News
• A free spaghetti dinner for veterans and active service members will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Mt. Pleasant Veterans of Foreign Wars, 416 W. Main St. Cost: nonveterans, $10; 10 and younger, $5.
