In conjunction with National Trail Day, Westmoreland Heritage Trail is hosting a Trail Towns Festival on June 1.

Trail enthusiasts are invited to cycle, walk, jog or push a stroller and join in the festivities to help support the trail, which covers 8.5 miles from Saltsburg to Delmont and 5.9 miles from Murrysville to Trafford.

Music, food, ice cream and fun activities are planned for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at B-Y Park in Trafford. The celebration then will continue with more of the same from 4-8 p.m. at the Slickville Fireman’s Pavilion.

Participants are invited to travel to the festivities from any trailhead. At each trailhead, there will be a table where participants can have their tickets punched. More punches mean more chances to win grand prizes.

Each community along the way is scheduled to host activities. Local businesses will be supporting the event with giveaway items and chances to win auction baskets. WHT also will sell trail hats, T-shirts and golf shirts.

The grand prize drawing will be held at the monthly WHT board meeting at 7 p.m. June 13 at The Lamplighter in Delmont. Winners need not be present.

All funds raised go toward trail maintenance and improvements. Future plans include connecting the two trail sections to complete a 22-mile trail from Saltsburg to Trafford and extend 4 miles to connect to the Great Allegheny Passage, according to the WHT website.

Those interested in attending the festival can register in advance at westmorelandheritagetrail.com, or register on the day of the event at any WHT trailhead. Fee is $10; children under 10 are free.

A trail map and information on trailheads and access points are available on the website.
