While several programs are up in the air due to the covid-19 pandemic, staff with the Westmoreland County Historical Society are preparing for the start of their season.
Following precautions used over the summer — including face masks, temperature checks and small group sizes — society executive director Lisa Hays suggested the season could kick off in May, with tours possibly resuming at Hanna’s Town.
The antiques and collectibles sale, which is the second Sunday of every month from May until October, would likely resume because of its outdoor location.
Society members are preparing for those events by listing available positions, including an administrative assistant, education assistant and education intern.
Because of the pandemic, members have also taken on several projects to prepare for the season, including creating virtual programs and podcasts.
Several capital projects were completed such as relocating a log house, planting native species to help the Hanna’s Town property look like it would have in 1769 and converting a log cabin used as a museum shop into a textile exhibit.
Hays said the projects were ones they “just didn’t have time to do before, so some things we had dreamed about doing but never had time to do.”
Hays noted the program committee is scheduled to meet next week to solidify this year’s programs and discuss alternatives to hosting the Frontier Court Days, which typically draws large crowds.
