Westmoreland man, woman killed in crash near Washington, D.C.
A Westmoreland County couple who loved music were coming home after attending a concert in Washington, D.C., when they were killed Sunday in an accident near the nation’s capital.
Alyssa Samantha-Dee Caldarelli, 22, of Adamsburg, and Ryan Dean, 26, of Murrysville were fatally injured in a crash along the George Washington Parkway on Sunday afternoon, said her father, Albert Caldarelli.
DC News Now said U.S. Park Police had reported that a car had left the roadway in Arlington and struck the overpass at the ramp to the southbound George Washington Parkway.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Park Police, which investigated the accident, could not be reached for comment Thursday.
Dean, the son of Tom and Kim Dean, also is survived by his sister, Lexy Dean. He was self-taught in playing multiple musical instruments and well-versed in many subjects, the family said in his obituary.
Lexy said her brother’s death has left her family and their friends heartbroken.
“Their love for each other was evident to everyone who knew them,” Lexy said.
Caldarelli, the daughter of Albert and Roberta Caldarelli, was a senior at Pitt-Greensburg. She was studying business management, specializing in marketing and minoring in psychology. She expected to graduate in December.
Caldarelli said his daughter and Dean had been dating for several months.
Her father said she expressed her love for music while she was in the house.
“She sang every day — two hours a day. It’s always something she did.
“I feel like I had an angel living with me and I did not know it,” Caldarelli said.
She and her twin sister, Ashley Sarina-Dee Caldarelli, a Penn State student, graduated from Hempfield Area High School in 2021.
Alyssa had worked part time at the Bean Bar in Irwin, said Audra Menhart, the manager of the family-owned business.
“She was one of our best baristas. She always had a smile and a joyful personality,” Menhart said.
Such was her personality that “she was like one of the family instantly,” Menhart said.
Pitt-Greensburg said in a statement that those affected by her death can take advantage of counseling and other support services through the campus counseling center at GbgCounseling@pitt.edu or by calling 724-836-7869. Counselors will be available for walk-in sessions this week from 2 to 3 p.m., the university said.
Visitation for Caldarelli will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at William Snyder Funeral Home, 521 Main St., Irwin. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, followed by interment at All Saints Braddock Cemetery, Braddock Hills.
Visitation for Dean will be from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Murrysville Alliance Church, 4130 Old William Penn Highway, Murrysville. A funeral service at the church will follow the visitation. A celebration of life will follow shortly after the service. Memorials can be made to the Humane Society of Westmoreland County.
