Westmoreland news includes Good Friday fish fry, art exhibit

Art exhibit

• The Greensburg Art Center and Greensburg Hempfield Area Library will sponsor an art exhibit featuring the oil and acrylic works of Carlow University graduate Maura Taylor from Friday to April 13 at the library, 237 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Greensburg. Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays; and 2 to 6 p.m. Thursdays. Please use the Third Street door. Details: 724-837-5620

Church services

• A Good Friday cross walk will begin at noon Friday in the parking lot of Derry First United Methodist Church, 311 N. Ligonier St. Details: 724-694-8333

• Pennsville Baptist Church, 3298 Richey Road, Bullskin, will have a special Good Friday service at 7 p.m. in the church auditorium. Details: pennsvillebaptist.com or 724-887-5200

Fundraisers

• The Elizabeth Township Historical Society will host an indoor craft and vendor show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the McKeesport Palisades Events Center, 100 Fifth Ave., McKeesport. There will be food, games, a basket raffle, a creativity tent, a pull-up clothing boutique van and an opportunity for children to visit with the Easter Bunny. Covid-19 protocols will be enforced, and masks are required.

• West Newton Lions Club will host a takeout Good Friday fish fry from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the club, 509 Pittsburgh St. Menu: deep fried Alaskan fish fillet on a homemade roll, choice of two sides, $12. Sides: macaroni and cheese, haluski, potato soup and coleslaw. Desserts: apple and coconut cream pie, $3.95 per piece; white coconut cake or chocolate cake, $4 per piece. Advance orders welcome. Garden advice

• The free advice hotline sponsored by the Westmoreland Penn State Extension Master Gardeners will open today to help residents with gardening questions and concerns. Topics include how to conduct a soil test, growing vegetables, fruits, ornamentals and turf grass, plant identification, pruning, wildlife and insect and disease problems. Questions should be emailed along with name, email address, telephone number, address and county to Westmoreland MG@psu.edu. Gardeners also can call the hotline at 724-858-4045 and leave a message.

Meetings

• Mt. Pleasant American Legion Auxiliary will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the post, 752 W. Main St. Lunch can be ordered from the kitchen menu. Masks required.

• Two chapters of the Women’s Business Network have scheduled meetings. Those attending can learn how the group supports the success and growth of women in business. Professional women are welcome and can attend as a guest at no cost. Some meetings will be held online. Call the chapter representative for more information.

The following meetings will be hosted in April by Sage’s Army Inc., a nonprofit that fights drug addiction, at the recovery center, 6044 Route 30, suite 400, Hempfield.

• Veteran X, 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays

• Family Reinforcement Recovery Group, 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, provides information, guidance and ongoing support for family members dealing with addiction.

• Gamblers Anonymous, 7:30 to 9 p.m. Mondays

• Dual Recovery Anonymous, 2 p.m. Mondays

• Recovery Life Group, 5:30 to 7 p.m. Mondays

• All Recovery, 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays

• SMART Recovery, 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Self-management and recovery training for those who are trying to change behaviors.

• Assiduous Rumination & Renewal Round Table, 8 a.m. April 24. This is a gathering of people being formed by rousing books, refreshing art and restorative ideas.

Events planned at the group headquarters, 216 Fourth St., Irwin, include:

• Women’s Coffee Group, 4 to 6 p.m. Friday. Informal meeting of women who have family members struggling with addiction.

• Grief Group, 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 14 and 28.

Tire recycling

Scrap tires can be taken to a special recycling event planned from 8:30 to noon April 10 at the Westmoreland Cleanways Recycling Center, 355 Pleasant Unity Mutual Road, Unity. Cost is based on the type of tire, and a $1 discount per tire will be given at the event. Business discounts will not apply.
