Morrie Brand, managing director,Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra, welcomes guests to the opening concert for the 48th season of the Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra in 2016. Brand will present a classical-music appreciation course in the fall at the Penn Area Library.

The Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra’s Academy of Music announced a slate of one-hour online summer courses.

Classes will include the academy’s annual exploration of the various periods of classical music, along with technique courses and a “Life in Music” series:

• “Classical Chatters” explores the four basic periods of classical music – Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th Century – and is taught by the symphony’s former executive director, Morrie Brand.

Classes will take place at 3:30 p.m., June 23 and July 9, and at noon on June 30 and July 16.

• Technique classes include improvement techniques for rhythm (1:30 p.m., June 25), sight reading (noon, July 7) and bow technique for string players (noon, July 14).

• “Life in Music” will introduce participants to the pursuit of being a full-time musician (noon, July 21) as well as a brief history of conducting, how a conductor chooses music for a concert, prepares for rehearsals and more (3:30 p.m., July 23).

Classes will be conducted using the Zoom online platform. They are free for current Westmoreland Youth Symphony Orchestra students, and $10 for non-students and families.
