The Westmoreland County Transit Authority this month launched a mobile phone application that provides riders with real-time tracking of local buses.
The MyStop app allows passengers to receive updates on bus locations and estimated arrival times along the agency’s route system that includes commuter service to Pittsburgh and local service throughout Westmoreland County.
“We’re hoping that eventually riders catch on,” said authority Deputy Director Ashley Cooper-Brounce.
Riders can receive instant updates via text messages and email through the app. A link to the MyStop app can be found on the authority’s webpage or downloaded to mobile devices.
“This is real-time bus information and lets riders locate where their buses are, their next stops and times they will reach destinations. Before this, the only way to get real-time information was to call and our dispatchers would have to radio or call drivers on the road,” Cooper-Brounce said. “This really allows riders to see in real time where their bus is and when it will be at their stop.”
The hardware and technical support for the program was paid for by PennDOT to install global positioning system software on the authority’s more than 40 buses that it operates on 18 weekday and six Saturday routes. The authority is responsible for costs associated with web service required to operate the system, officials said.
Similar tracking systems have been implemented by other transit agencies, including Pittsburgh Regional Transit.
