Westmoreland County Transit will provide free rides on its buses and paratransit vehicles to local covid-19 vaccine clinics.

Anyone with a scheduled appointment to receive the vaccine is eligible for the service Mondays through Saturdays in the service area, including Westmoreland County and Downtown Pittsburgh.

“We wanted to eliminate a barrier for people,” said authority Executive Director Alan Blahovec.

Customers seeking rides for vaccines must call the authority’s customer service department at 724-834-9282 to make arrangements, Blahovec said. Representatives will be available weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for scheduling rides to and from destinations along the agency’s fixed-route bus service as well as by Go Westmoreland, the shared ride door-to-door service.

The authority operates 20 daily and six Saturday bus routes throughout the county and commuter service to Downtown Pittsburgh. Go Westmoreland is a shared-ride subsidized ride program that operates throughout the region with a fleet of more than 60 vehicles.

Blahovec said the authority will use revenue from a $7 million CARES Act grant received last year to pay for the program.
