A design painted by students at Yough High School on PennDOT snowplow blades was the winner of online voting last month, according to the department.

Their design featured a cougar, the school mascot, warning drivers to slow down and included the theme “Don’t Rush in Ice and Slush.” Students at the high school won the contest for the second consecutive year.

Connellsville Area Career & Technical Center won an honorable mention for the fan favorite award.

The winner of the judges’ pick contest was Beth Center High School. Students there painted a bulldog, the school mascot, in front of a brick background along with the theme for this year’s contest. Yough High School earned second place in the judges’ pick contest.

Five other schools painted snowplow blades to participate in the department’s four-county District 12 contest: Canon-McMillan, Jeannette City, Laurel Highlands, Trinity and West Greene.

The program started during the 2015-16 winter season in Cambria County and has since spread across the state. Schools in Westmoreland County participated in the contest in 2017 and 2018. Yough continued its reign over the contest, winning last year’s online voting and tying with Greater Latrobe for the judge’s pick.
