Youngwood man jailed since 2017 released

A Youngwood man, jailed since his arrest two years ago on charges that he assaulted a woman in her home, was released on nominal bond Thursday.

Charles Agger Jr., 53, was arrested in November 2017 and charged with felony counts of aggravated assault, strangulation and burglary after police said climbed through a window and attacked a woman who had previously told him he was no longer welcome in her home.

Common Pleas Court Judge Tim Krieger ruled Agger, who had been held in jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond since his arrest, be released because his case has taken too long to bring to trial. State rules require trials for incarcerated defendants within six months.

The judge rejected Agger’s plea to have the case against him dismissed.

Krieger ordered Agger have no contact with the woman and he must report to the county’s probation office weekly.

Agger is serving as his own lawyer; his trial is set for Dec. 2.
