Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County board members on Friday awarded a $7.2 million contract to an Allegheny County construction firm for a three-year project to replace water and sewer lines in Youngwood.

Authority officials said Jet Jack Inc. of Oakdale submitted the lowest of six bids for the work expected to begin in March.

The work is being done in conjunction with PennDOT’s project to resurface sections of Route 119 that run through the borough. PennDOT is expected to pay for 75% of the water and sewer line replacement costs.

Authority officials said 5.6 miles of water and sewer lines that run under Youngwood’s main drag will be replaced in addition to new manholes, valves and fire hydrants being installed. The project’s first phase between Burton Avenue and Hillis Street is expected to be completed by mid-May.

Work on Third Street, the northbound section of Route 119, is scheduled to take about 13 months, with a targeted completion date of April 1, 2021. The southbound Fourth Street phase of the project is slated for completion in April 2022.

Authority officials will hold a public meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 12 at the Youngwood Fire Department where engineers and MAWC staff will speak about and answer questions regarding the project.
