The Outpost River’s Edge Eatery, a youth-operated restaurant along the Youghiogheny River and the Great Allegheny Passage trail in West Newton, will open for its fourth season Saturday, April 6.
Initial hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays through Sundays, with plans for an expanded daily operating schedule beginning in June.
As in past years, the Outpost will feature live music on its outdoor stage on Friday nights during the summer. Also, local craft brewery Bloom Brew’s draft wagon will be open next to the Outpost on Fridays through Mondays.
Operating from a repurposed cargo container, the eatery serves as a workforce development program of the Waypoint youth and community center in West Newton.
Waypoint CEO Chris Morse expects to staff the Outpost this season with 21 local youths serving as interns or employees.
He anticipates sales may exceed $200,000.
Brynne Keener, shift supervisor and a Yough High School senior, is credited last season with developing a Monster Burger sandwich that features two large hamburger patties equal to four regular-size patties.
“It’s more than a half-pound of meat,” Morse said, noting additional varieties in the Monster Burger line will be offered this year.
