The Pittsburgh region could be in for wind gusts as strong as 50 mph Sunday afternoon, according to meteorologists.

Heavy showers are moving through the eastern portion of Ohio and are expected to hit the Allegheny County area at about 3 p.m., said Andrew Kienzle, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Moon.

“Embedded in that line, we’re seeing gusts of 45 mph,” Kienzle said.

On Sunday morning, wind gusts in the Pittsburgh area ranged anywhere from 30 to 45 mph, Kienzle said. From about 3 to 4:30 p.m., gusts could get as high as 50 mph.

Kienzle predicts a lull in winds from at about 4:30 or 5 p.m.. Gusts will pick up at about 7 or 8 p.m.

Up to an inch of rain is possible, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

Kienzle predicts clearer skies Monday, but winds to remain elevated at around 25 to 30 mph. Monday’s high is in the 60s.

“We’ll get rid of the rain, but it’ll sill be gusty,” Kienzle said.
