Pittsburgh’s Planning Commission is considering a zoning change on a Homewood West site where GetGo is looking to open a gas station and convenience store with fresh groceries and hot food.

The site, near the corner of Frankstown and Fifth avenues, is now zoned for residential use. The proposal before the Planning Commission would change the zoning to allow for the gas station and convenience store development.

“This is an important addition to this section of Homewood,” said Shawn Carter, special assistant to Pittsburgh City Councilman Ricky Burgess.

The 1.3-acre site is now vacant, according to information presented to the Planning Commission on Tuesday.

The proposed GetGo convenience store would offer on-site dining and an “expanded offering” of fresh foods compared to other GetGo sites, said Lee May, development director with Giant Eagle and GetGo.

“We have a large portion of the floor area dedicated to the groceries,” May said. “That includes not only basic staples, but frozen food items as well as fresh produce and bakery in addition to all the seasonal items that may be on display.”

The Planning Commission is expected to vote on the zoning change at its next meeting in two weeks.

If commissioners approve the zoning change, it also would require City Council approval. GetGo would need to come before the Planning Commission again to present and gain approval for a finalized site plan.
