The University of Pittsburgh on Friday set salaries ranging from $300,000 to $630,000 for three new officers hired under Chancellor Joan Gabel and approved a retention bonus for a fourth officer predating her tenure.

Two of the new hires will start at pay levels topping their predecessors who served in the same roles, while a third also will earn more but perform duties previously held by two officers.

The Pitt board of trustees compensation committee approved the salaries recommended by Gabel without public discussion.

Provost Joseph McCarthy will receive a salary of $543,000, retroactive to being elected an officer on April 4. His predecessor, Ann Cudd, served five years as provost and earned $495,670.

Phil Bakken will receive $300,000 as vice chancellor and secretary to Pitt’s board of trustees, His predecessor, Rosalyn Jones, received $260,625.

Dwayne Pinkney, hired in May as executive senior vice chancellor for administration and finance and CFO, will receive a salary of $630,000, a $50,000 signing bonus and deferred compensation of $100,000 a year starting in summer 2025 and payable in a lump sum in year six.

He is assuming duties of two former officers, Narahari Sastry and David DeJong, who were paid a combined $876,874.

For Geovette Washington, senior vice chancellor and chief legal officer, the committee approved retention payments of $200,000 by July 30, 2024, and $150,000 on July 30, 2025, 2026, 2027 and 2028, so long as she remains in her role at Pitt.

Gabel’s salary was not modified by the committee. She began her duties as chancellor in July with a salary of $950,000.
