Gerhardt Konig, a former UPMC employee and Pittsburgher, is accused of trying to kill his wife while on a hike in Hawaii.
He was taken into custody by Honolulu Police Department at around 6:45 p.m. HST on Monday near the Pali Highway, according to Honolulu police.
Authorities said Konig, 46, hit his wife, 36, in the head with a rock and attempted to push her off a hiking trail at the Pali Lookout the morning of his arrest, Honolulu police reported.
Following the attack, Konig left the scene but was later captured after a brief police chase.
“Mahalo to the public for your assistance,” the police wrote on Facebook.
His wife was taken to the hospital, where she is in critical condition, police said, and charges against Konig are still pending.
Konig was listed as an assistant professor and a UPMC anesthesiologist on his biography page on the University of Pittsburgh’s website, but the link has since been taken down.
His LinkedIn profile describes him as an anesthesia doctor, and says he worked at UPMC for nine years until March 2023 and attended the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine. He now works for the Anesthesia Medical Group in Hawaii, according to LinkedIn.
He has not worked for the medical center for more than two years, according to a UPMC spokesperson.
Konig now lives in Maui, police said.
