Officials target Vitamin E as cause for vaping illnesses

The security of safeness of vaping has taken another hit.

Federal and state health officials have targeted Vitamin E as the cause of vaping-related illnesses that have affected people across the country.

As of last week, 215 possible cases of severe lung disease associated with the use of e-cigarettes had been reported by 25 states, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There have been two deaths, one in Illinois and one in Oregon.

The chemical is an oil derived from vitamin E. Investigators at the Food and Drug Administration found the oil in cannabis products in samples collected from patients who fell ill across the country.

Vitamin E acetate was not found in the nicotine products tested.
