With a post-holiday, critical need for donations, the American Red Cross is asking donors to begin the new year by giving blood or platelets.
As a sign of appreciation and a special incentive, those who donate blood or platelets through Jan. 19 will be entered in a chance to win a trip to Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2 in Miami.
The package offers one winner two Super Bowl tickets, official NFL Tailgate entry, tickets to Super Bowl Experience at the Miami Beach Convention Center, round-trip airfare to Miami, three-night hotel accommodations and a $500 gift card for expenses.
Type O blood is a critical need, with the Red Cross reporting less than a three-day supply.
During the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s, volunteer sponsor groups hosted about 500 fewer blood drives than required to meet patient needs, the Red Cross says.
Travel and holiday activities can make donating challenging.
“Lifesaving medical treatments and emergencies never take a holiday,” says Paul Sullivan, senior vice president, Red Cross Biomedical Services. “Declines in donations can affect patient care. That’s why the Red Cross is encouraging eligible donors to make an appointment to give now and help those sidelined by illness and trauma.”
Donors at any American Red Cross location can qualify for the trip, says spokeswoman Regina Boothe Bratton.
