Mary Alice Weir never forgot a birthday or anniversary of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

“She always sent out cards. She even had the cards in her drawer at Westmoreland Manor, and she got them out in the mail,” said her daughter-in-law, Michelle Weir of Hempfield.

She remembered so many of those dates, as well as having them in an address book, Michelle Weir said.

Mary Alice Weir, 91, died Saturday, May 25, 2019, in Westmoreland Manor, Hempfield.

Mrs. Weir was born Nov. 9, 1927, in Greensburg, a daughter of the late Raymond C. and Alice Keough Flanigan.

After graduating from Greensburg High School in 1945, she married Robert H. Weir Sr., who served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. The couple had met through friends and married in November 1946, said her son, William “Bill” Weir of Greensburg.

Mrs. Weir was a stay-at-home mother for her four children and watched her grandchildren as well, Michelle Weir said.

“She loved her children, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren,” Michelle Weir said.

She loved to cook and made “the best stuffed pork chops you ever ate in your life,” Michelle Weir said. When it came time for the holidays, Mrs. Weir loved to cook for her large family and continued to do so into her 80s, she said.

Mrs. Weir was a member of South Greensburg United Methodist Church. She had been a member of American Legion Post 981 Ladies Auxiliary and the S.N.P.J. Club of Carbon, and she was a life member of South Greensburg Hunt Club.

Bill Weir said, while his mother was in Westmoreland Manor, she became like a grandmother to the nurses and aides.

“She took them under her wings,” Michelle Weir said.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Timothy J. Weir, a sister and a son-in-law.

Surviving are two sons, Robert H. Weir Jr., of Bellefonte, and William “Bill” A. Weir; a daughter, Carol Pocratsky of Harrison City; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Barnhart Funeral Home, 505 E. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Interment will follow in St. Clair Cemetery, Hempfield.
