With the official start of summer just around the corner, many are getting their vacation plans together.

The Outer Banks has long been a popular summer destination for Western Pennsylvania residents, and this year it made a spot on a special list.

Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, more commonly known as Dr. Beach, ranked Lighthouse Beach of the Outer Banks as the fifth best beach in the U.S. in his annual top ten list.

“This lifeguarded beach is the number one surfing spot on the U.S. Atlantic Coast,” explained Leatherman. “It is fun to stroll down to the Cape Point where a long sand spit often exists, making one feel somewhat like Moses because the waves are coming from both directions as you walk along this narrow string of sand in the ocean.”

Lighthouse Beach wasn’t the only East Coast destination to be recognized by the geoscientist and coastal ecologist. Beaches in New York, Massachusetts, South Carolina and Florida also earned spots.

Here is a look Dr. Beach’s 2023 top ten beaches:

Leatherman noted this location as a “fun area for children to play,” due to the small waves that break on a sandbar found at Poipu Beach.

In addition to the sand bar, “you will find a large open area behind the beach as well as parking, snorkel rentals to explore the coral reef and surfboard rentals.”
