Mountain Craft Days | September 5–7 | Somerset Historical Center, Somerset
Ambitious artisans demonstrate 18th- and early-19th-century craftsmanship using wood, stone, iron, wool, glass, paper and more. Enjoy live music, demonstrations scattered through wooded settings, and local specialties such as potpie, apple dumplings, and open-fire corn on the cob.
Ligonier Highland Games | September 13 (with related weekend events) | Idlewild Park, Ligonier
Celebrate Celtic roots as heavy-athletics competitors toss the caber, pipe bands perform, Gaelic dancers compete, and vendors offer kilts, Scottish fare and genealogy tents. A Ceilidh, clan gatherings and children’s events round out the cultural immersion.
Stahlstown Flax Scutching Festival | September 20–21 |Monticue’s Grove, 1703 Route 711, Stahlstown
Experience the oldest active scutching festival in the nation and learn how flax fibers are transformed into linen. The weekend features live re-enactors, antique farm machinery, arts and crafts, traditional music, children’s areas and a dramatic mock “raid on the homestead.” Admission is $5, free for children under 12; parking is complimentary.
Whether you’re tracing your Scottish ancestry, keen on antique machinery, drawn to folk crafts or eager to explore textile traditions, each festival offers a vibrant window into the region’s past.
