In the winter, you can shop its huge selection of seed packets and seed starting products. Or maybe you want to green up your home with a new houseplant and planter. There are soils and supplies to keep your plants happy.

Laurel springs to life in April and May. It has eight production greenhouses to grow hanging baskets, geraniums, combo planters and vegetables. In its annual area, thousands of flats of flowers and vegetables, individual annuals and herbs are stocked.

In the sales yard, the flowering trees and shrubs are spectacular along with lush evergreens for any landscape situation. “Shrubbery-wise, anything you can think of, we have,” says Ken Heese, president of Laurel Nursery/Garden Center. “Annuals-same thing: Every variety that you can come up with, we have.”

Come early summer, perennials come to life with beautiful blooms and foliage. Weekly shipments arrive throughout the month of June.

It’s not over yet. It’s time for autumn. “We do a full line of fall decorations along with over 100 varieties of pumpkins, gourds and squash along with cornstalks, ornamental corn and straw,” says Heese. “In our sales area we grow over 5,000 fall mums in a range of sizes, along with flowering kale and pansies. And of course, our gift shop has beautiful wreaths, flags, rugs and tabletop items.”

Last, but not least, there’s Christmas. The store is transformed into a holiday wonderland with theme trees, ornaments, ribbon, bows, light sets and artificial wreaths, garland and picks. In the retail greenhouse, there are hundreds of poinsettias, grown here, along with holiday plants, such as Christmas cactus and Cyclamen. Outside under cover are fragrant and lush live cut trees, greens and wreaths.

Laurel Nursery/Garden Center has grown over its 48-year history from just one acre in 1974 to the sprawling operation it is today. The family operation was started by John and Joyce Heese. Today, their son, Ken, daughter-in-law, and grandson are all part of the 78-acre operation.

“We’re in the third generation,” Heese said. “We have no plans on going anywhere but being here.”

Whether it’s flowers and plants from the greenhouses, clothing and jewelry from LuLu’s Boutique, or décor and more from the gift shop, Laurel Nursery/Garden Center has every season covered.
