The Garden Room at the National Aviary is a place for families to gather.

The National Aviary will present a lineup of holiday events with close-ups and personal opportunities to see some of its more than 500 birds while noshing on gourmet food and festive beverages.

“No matter the event, you are in for a unique experience with the birds at the Aviary this holiday season,” said Megan Hinds, the Aviary’s Senior Marketing Manager.

Season’s Greetings Saturdays for families will kick off a flurry of winter events on Nov. 27 and Dec. 4, 11 and 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This special Saturday event includes a meet-and-greet with one of the Aviary’s birds during a winter-themed story-time in the theater. A North Pole-approved mailbox will be available to write and mail letters directly to Santa on Season’s Greetings Saturdays.

Children also take home a holiday-themed craft.

Specialty handcrafted artisan items such as jewelry — some bird-themed, some not — will be for sale in the Aviary’s eclectic and a must-go-to gift shop.

A series of holiday-themed events will provide the public a chance to dine in the Aviary’s new Garden Room, with its wall of bird-safe windows looking out into the Allegheny Commons Park.

Holiday Brunch in the Garden will run on Dec. 12 and 19 with two seatings each day, at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Atria’s Chef Josef Karst and his catering team will serve up Challah French toast with whipped mascarpone and maple syrup, fresh baked Danishes, Texas sage links and holiday ham. The gourmet possibilities are many with this holiday brunch feast that also includes the option of Farmer’s Basil Crepes in Mornay sauce and seared Atlantic salmon in mustard dill sauce.

Adult beverages will be offered for purchase and include the festive Raw Bar Mary, Saint Nikolaus bock and Not Your Average Screwdriver.

Brunchgoers are invited to visit with the birds throughout the Aviary’s immersive habitats after they dine.

Keep the holiday cheer going with Late Nights! Holidays in the Garden, presented by Hefren-Tillotson, Inc., Dec. 26, 27, 28, and 29 from 5 to 8 p.m.

The family-friendly event in The Garden Room will be decked out in holiday décor where patrons can buy seasonal small plates, holiday cocktails and hot chocolate.

Offerings include butternut bisque with cinnamon croutons, a holiday cheese board, jumbo Gulf shrimp cocktail, crab cake sliders, vegan stuffed peppers and more.

Meet-and-greets with birds and festive live entertainment in the evening distinguish this holiday event from others.

“The habitats are lovely at night as you can spot beautiful birds roosting in the trees all around you,” Hinds said. “This is a great opportunity to see National Aviary birds in a different way.”
