The American spirit means many things to many people. It’s hard work and sacrifice. It’s family and community. In Washington County, it’s a smiley 10-year-old girl named Temperance Scott.

Temperance, a fifth-grader at Canon-McMillan School District, was selected from a casting call to be the face of the Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency’s new branding and marketing campaign for 2019. Titled “The American Spirit Lives Here,” the patriotic campaign sends an uplifting message to tourists and residents about what makes Washington County different and desirable.

As the winner, Temperance is featured in the new multi-platform “The American Spirit” campaign for Washington County Tourism and received a $500 gift card to use at Tanger Outlet Center.

Temperance will appear on the front of the new ‘Washington County Attractions Guide’ (available May 15) and can be seen starring in and as recorded voiceover for the campaign’s television commercial and various print and digital advertisements.

“We have an important story to tell in Washington County, and who better to tell that story than a young resident that is discovering that Washington County is home to some of the country’s finest historical, entertainment, and cultural attractions,” said Jeff Kotula, President of the Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency.

An open countywide casting call for the role was held in mid-March at Southpointe Golf Club for girls ages 8 to 11.

Temperance responded to the call at the suggestion of her mother.

“She does some acting and singing and plays the piano, so I thought it would be good practice for her just to see how an audition would work,” said Temperance’s mother, Dana Scott. “It turned out to be a great experience for all of us.”

Temperance resides in North Strabane Township with her parents, Dana and Fred Scott, a Pennsylvania State Police trooper stationed at The Meadows Casino Racetrack Hotel.

“I was really excited. I’ve never been on tv before,” said Temperance. “I thought it was really fun.”

The new campaign highlights the county’s diverse tourism assets. Temperance and other local residents of all ages can be seen kayaking and enjoying nature, shopping and dining at local hotspots, attending concerts at KeyBank Pavilion and at the DICK’S Sporting Goods PONY League World Series baseball games at Lew Hayes Field, gaming at the Meadows Casino Racetrack Hotel and participating in historical reenactments at local community festivals.

“We wanted to put into focus who we are and what we have here in Washington County. We wanted to show geographic connectivity to Pittsburgh, but we wanted to show a slower lifestyle, the value in community, the value in family, and the value in hard work,” said Chase McClain, Director of Marketing for the Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency.

Tourism brings in more than $700 million per year to Washington County and creates more than 5,800 jobs. The county hosts more than 2,750 individual hotel rooms.

“One of the biggest travel segments we have comes from people visiting friends and family,” said McClain. “We want to encourage residents to say to friends and family, ‘Hey, this great event is happening. Why don’t you come out and stay for the weekend?’”
