Faster than a speeding … A living Superhero at the National Aviary

While movie theaters this summer are filled with superheroes, only the National Aviary will be thrilling audiences with Superheroes of the Sky, presented by Breeze Airways. Filling the starring roles in the new seasonal theme are National Aviary experts and a cast of amazing birds from around the world. Bird superhero powers, like flight speed and grip strength, are on display daily through special programming at the Aviary, located in Pittsburgh’s North Side.

“Birds have remarkable adaptations that allow them to thrive in the most extreme environments, from arid deserts to frozen tundra,” says Cathy Schlott, Director of Animal Programs and Experiences for the National Aviary. “These adaptations are birds’ superpowers, and they make them heroes for the roles they play in their habitats.

“Superheroes of the Sky celebrates all things that make birds unique and helps guests unlock the power to be heroes for the environment themselves.”

SkyDeck, presented by the Pittsburgh International Airport, is a live rooftop theater show where birds of prey fly freely above the heads of the audience. During SkyDeck, spectators get a firsthand look at Lanner Falcons, seeing just how fast they truly are. Black Kites and Hooded Vultures also swoop down and fly around the Aviary, located in Allegheny Commons Park. SkyDeck runs daily at noon and 3 p.m., weather permitting, with a $5 charge added to admission.

Habitat Heroes, presented by AAA Travel, is an immersive bird show where the magnificent Bald Eagle and thrilling Eurasian Eagle-Owl are the stars! The audience experiences these super birds up close while learning astonishing facts about them and how they can help preserve the habitats of these amazing species. The daily shows start at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. AAA Travel members receive $1 off the $5 charge.

Younger visitors will find plenty of playtime opportunities with new and improved play areas throughout the Aviary. Dress up as favorite superheroes and compare superpowers to those of Avian Avengers. Test out the new nest in Condor Court, sample the improved items at the sensory table, and try out the new display at the Draw Alive! Station. With comic-themed décor, it’s also ideal for photo-ops.

While the Aviary’s summer camps for kids are already sold out, adult summer camp tickets are still available. Grownups can feel like a kid again with two camp options. Spend the day onsite with National Aviary staff to see what goes into taking care of the more than 500 birds and other animals who call the Aviary home. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on two dates, Aug. 12 and 19. There’s also an off-site option to spend a day outside with National Aviary staff and L.L. Bean at North Park. Kayak, birdwatch, hike, and play classic camp games from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 25.
