The roof is arguably the most important part of your home. It protects the structure and its contents from all forms of weather we face in Western Pennsylvania, from rain and snow to wind and hail.

“A professionally installed roof ensures that your home’s valuables are safe and secure, withstanding heavy rain, high winds and severe storms,” says Andrew Bell, manager of marketing at Bella Construction & Development Inc.

Bella Construction is the leading residential roofing company in the Pittsburgh area. They focus on quality and affordability and offer a lifetime warranty, adding more value to your home.

The local, family-owned business has operated for more than 25 years and offers quality craftsmanship that sets them apart from the competition.

Bell says having a professional installer “gives homeowners a peace of mind of knowing your roof is expected to stand up for years on end without problems.”

Do you need a new roof?

Bell says conventional roofs last, on average, around 20 years.

“Roofs past their expiration can lead to big problems,” he says.

He explains some ways to know if you need a new roof:

• Curled shingles: This is a sign that your roof is coming to the end of its life and needs to be replaced. Curled shingles also could be a result of defective installation. In this case, homeowners should contact Bella immediately for a professional inspection.

• Missing shingle debris: Finding shingle granules or pieces in your gutters or scattered around can signal the end of a roof’s life.

• Sunlight in the attic: If sunlight can get in, so can water. If you see sunlight through your roof boards, it might be time for a new roof.

“Bella offers free in-house inspections to determine the amount of damage and will work with insurance companies to file a claim,” Bell says.

What you need to know

A homeadvisor.com survey reports that the average roof installation costs between $5,347 and $10,639, depending on materials.

While asphalt is the most popular type of roofing, according to consumerreports.org, there are several materials that can be used, including slate, tile or metal.

Asphalt shingles, made of fiberglass sandwiched between asphalt and ceramic granules, come in two types: architectural, which is the most common, and dimensional, which are layered to make them look more like expensive wood or slate shakes. They are easy to install and are a good choice if you’re trying to keep the budget low. Asphalt roofs can last for 30 years under good conditions, according to consumer reports.

Another material option is metal, which comes in steel, aluminum and alloy strips. Metal roofs are easy to install and weigh about half as much as asphalt, but a consumer reports survey warns that metal can dent easily in adverse conditions.

No matter what material you choose for your roof, it is important to hire a professional, such as Bella Construction, to ensure a complete inspection, use of the best materials and, of course, proper installation.

While replacing your roof can be pricey, Remodeling Magazine found in a 2019 study that a new roof increases the value of a home by an average of $15,427. Bell adds that a new roof also can add to the curb appeal and help reduce energy costs.

“Today, the new roofing technology has insulating value,” Bell says, “helping deflect heat, keeping your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter.”

Bella Construction specializes in roofing and installation, but the company also installs siding and seamless gutters.
