Two people were hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after a small plane crashed into a utility truck on a Pennsylvania Turnpike exit ramp in Fairview Township.

The single-engine aircraft hit the truck around 2:35 p.m., according to Ted Czech with York County’s emergency management office. The truck is believed to have been traveling on the exit ramp when it was struck, Czech said.

The turnpike ramp is less than a mile from the Capital City Airport, although Czech said that responders could not yet confirm if the plane was trying to land, nor any other details as to what may have caused it to go down.

The two occupants of the plane were taken to the hospital, one via ambulance and one via helicopter. Czech said authorities could not yet discuss the extent of their injuries. The driver of the truck was not seriously injured, Czech said.

The crash closed all of the entrance and exit ramps connecting the turnpike to Interstate 83.

The plane and truck were still on the ramp around 5 p.m. Wednesday, and first responders said they would not be moving the vehicles until the Federal Aviation Administration, which is investigating the crash, said to do so.

Numerous local fire departments, as well as the Pennsylvania State Police, also responded to the scene.
