Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine speaks at a news conference with Gov. Tom Wolf to discuss two presumed positive cases of coronavirus in Pennsylvania on Friday, March 6, 2020.

Two people with presumed positive cases of the coronavirus are under quarantine in Delaware and Wayne counties, Gov. Tom Wolf and Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said during a news conference Friday.

“We have two individuals with presumed positive cases of covid-19,” Levine said. “They are both at home. They are in isolation and quarantine, and at the same time, they are in good physical condition.”

The cases were not a result of community transmission, Levine said.

“It was through some travel,” Levine said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will confirm the Pennsylvania cases.

Following the announcement, Wolf signed an emergency disaster declaration to provide increased support to state agencies involved in the response to the virus, according to a statement.

“It is critical to prepare for and respond to suspected or confirmed cases in the commonwealth and to implement measures to mitigate the spread of covid-19,” Wolf said in a statement. “The disaster declaration is an additional way we can be prepared, so I authorized the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency Director, or his designee, to assume command and control of all statewide emergency operations and authorize and direct that all commonwealth departments and agencies use all available resources and personnel as is deemed necessary to cope with this emergency situation.”

One of the two presumed positive cases is an adult from Wayne County, located in the northeastern part of the state, who recently traveled to a country where covid-19 is present, a statement from Wolf’s office said.

The other case, an adult in Delaware County, in the southeastern part of the state, recently traveled to an area of the United States where covid-19 is present, the statement said.

Levine declined to provide further details related to the cases during the press conference in order to protect the privacy of the patients.

Officials will now systematically review those individuals’ contacts and quarantine those people, Levine said.

This situation is not related to school closures announced Friday in Bucks County, where five schools were closed over coronavirus concerns.

There are no confirmed cases of covid-19 in Bucks County, Levine said. There have been no reported confirmed cases in the state.

Numerous state agencies, including the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, state police and departments of human services, education, agriculture, aging and others are involved in monitoring and preparing for the potential spread of covid-19, Wolf said during the press conference.

“Right now the emphasis of the plan is mitigation tactics, to keep this virus from spreading widely,” Wolf said. “The confirmation of these presumed positive cases should serve as a reminder of the role that every Pennsylvanian must continue to play.”

That includes taking the time to thoroughly wash hands, avoid touching your face, sneeze or cough into your elbow and avoid others if you are sick.
