6 Western Pa. counties set new highs as Pa. reports record new coronavirus cases

Six counties in southwestern Pennsylvania experienced their highest single-day coronavirus case totals, as the state set another record for most new cases in a single day on Wednesday.

Pennsylvania added 6,339 new positive cases, raising the state’s total to 281,852. The previous high of 5,900 was set Tuesday.

Allegheny, Armstrong, Fayette, Indiana, Washington and Westmoreland reached new highs on Wednesday. Here’s how the region fared, with total cases and the change from Tuesday:

  • Allegheny: 21,434 (+620)
  • Armstrong: 1,331 (+54)
  • Beaver: 3,012 (+96)
  • Butler: 3,218 (+110)
  • Fayette: 1,502 (+74)
  • Indiana: 1,936 (+75)
  • Somerset: 1,045 (+82)
  • Washington: 3,340 (+117)
  • Westmoreland: 6,649 (+228)

The state added 110 deaths on Wednesday, bringing the state total to 9,465. Of those deaths 106 are from November and four are from October. It’s the most deaths added in a state report since May 20 when 143 were added to the state total.

Of those deaths, eight are from Allegheny, five are from Westmoreland, three each are from Somerset and Washington, two apiece are from Butler and Fayette, and one each are from Armstrong and Indiana. Beaver County has the highest rate of deaths per 100,000 people in the region, at 87.4.

According to the state’s covid-19 dashboard, there are currently 2,904 coronavirus patients hospitalized in the state, an increase of 167 from Tuesday’s 2,737. The state has 5,043 ventilators, with 1,276 in use, 310 by covid-19 patients. Just last Wednesday, there were 2,080 covid-19 patients hospitalized, a gain of more than 800 in a week.

Here’s how hospitalizations break down in Western Pennsylvania, compared to Tuesday:

  • Allegheny: 355 (+37)
  • Armstrong: 13 (+4)
  • Beaver: 19 (-1)
  • Butler: 35 (+5)
  • Fayette: 9 (-1)
  • Indiana: 29 (no change)
  • Somerset: 4 (+2)
  • Washington: 71 (+15)
  • Westmoreland: 70 (+10)

According to the health department, the state’s percent positivity for the week of Nov. 6-12 is 9.6%.

On Tuesday, Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine announced new restrictions for Pennsylvania. They include wearing a mask indoors when with anyone from outside their household and new mandates for out-of-state travelers.
