610 new coronavirus cases, 119 additional deaths reported in Pa.
State health officials on Tuesday reported more than 100 new coronavirus deaths across Pennsylvania along with 610 new cases of the virus.
The 119 newly reported deaths bring the statewide death toll to 4,624. The total number of cases across the state since March 6 now stands at 63,666.
Those numbers, reported to the state Department of Health throughout the day Monday, included 17 new cases in Allegheny County as well as one more death.
The county’s totals now stand at 1,658 cases and 144 deaths.
In Westmoreland County, the total number of cases actually fell by one, down to 431.
Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine has explained that county-level numbers can fluctuate, as more granular data — like an individual’s legal county of residence — isn’t always immediately available. For example, someone might be a resident of a Westmoreland County care facility but still have a legal residence in a different county. Per federal guidelines, covid-19 deaths are counted in the deceased individual’s home county.
Across the state 286,034 people have tested negative for the virus.
Levine said her department is working with the governor’s office to lay out criteria for counties to move into the green phase of the state’s tiered reopening. That information could come later this week. Much of Eastern Pennsylvania remains in the red, or most restrictive, phase. The green phase, as its been described so far, would lift all remaining restrictions, including those prohibiting restaurants from allowing dine-in options.
The third set of counties announced by Gov. Tom Wolf will move into the yellow phase on Friday. The latest group includes Beaver County, the only Southwestern Pennsylvania still in the red phase. Allegheny, Westmoreland and most other Southwestern Pennsylvania counties moved into the yellow phase May 15.
It was not clear Tuesday whether Wolf would announce a fourth round of counties this week.
