A fourth case of coronavirus has been recorded in Allegheny County, the county’s Department of Health announced Sunday afternoon.
The revelation came about an hour after the state Health Department announced a third case in the county.
The two latest patients are adults, both in their 60s, according to a statement from Allegheny County. One person is hospitalized, and the other is in isolation at home.
“Like with the two previous cases, ACHD has begun a contact investigation,” the county said in a prepared statement. “Officials have and will continue to follow up with all individuals identified as close contacts of the two known cases and will enforce appropriate quarantine measures.”
One patient confirmed to have covid-19 — the illness casued by the virus — is being treated at Jefferson Hospital in Jefferson Hills, Allegheny Health Network officials said in a statement. County health officials are trying to identify people who came in contact with that patient, the statement said.
About noon, the state announced that 16 additional cases had been confirmed, bringing Pennsylvania’s total to 63. Allegheny County’s latest report, plus two additional cases reported by Philadephia that are also not included in the state report, would bring the total to 66.
The county’s tally does not mirror that provided by the state because the county is getting results from commercial labs, according to county spokeswoman Amie Downs.
The county Health Department said it anticipates additional confirmed cases in coming days.
Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Rachel Levine was not scheduled to hold a media briefing Sunday but released a statement.
“While we anticipate that there will be more Pennsylvanians with covid-19 in the coming days and weeks, it is important for residents to know the commonwealth is prepared and to be prepared themselves,” Levine said. “Right now, you have a higher chance of testing positive for covid-19 if you have traveled to a country or state with known community outbreaks or have come in contact with someone who has the virus. We are working with the health care community across Pennsylvania to keep them informed, consult on patient testing and ensuring they have the resources they need to care for patients.”
According to the state, there have been 446 patients who have been tested or are awaiting lab results — 205 have tested negative, and 183 samples are pending results.
The state’s cases break down as follows: Allegheny (4); Bucks (4); Chester (2); Cumberland (5); Delaware (7); Lehigh (1); Luzerne (1); Monroe (6); Montgomery (24); Northampton (1); Philadelphia (6); Pike (1); Washington (1); Wayne (1).
